The bulk of the Ape Escape video games was developed by Japan Studio and published by Sony. The game has ape-related humor, unique gameplay, and several pop culture allusions.
The first game in the Ape Escape series depicts the story of Specter, an ape that gets greater intellect and an evil streak after wearing an experimental helmet. Specter creates an army of monkeys and sends them across time to remake history. Spike, the main character, sets out to catch the apes using unique technologies.
Ape Escape was released for the PlayStation in 1998, and was the first game to require the DualShock controller’s dual analog sticks. The game spawned numerous sequels and spin-offs, beginning with Ape Escape 2 in 2002. It is widely considered one of the greatest games on the PlayStation console and has received several re-releases. A remastered version for the PSP was released in 2005 to mixed reviews.
