Square Enix veteran Akitoshi Kawazu, known for his work on the Final Fantasy and SaGa series, has shared his thoughts on the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch successor, expected to be announced in 2025. Speaking about his excitement for the platform, Kawazu highlighted both personal and professional enthusiasm for the new console.
“The successor to the Nintendo Switch that Nintendo will announce in 2025 and the corresponding market strategy that Nintendo will develop—I’m looking forward to it as both a user and a creator,” Kawazu stated.
While the Nintendo Switch successor hasn’t been announced yet, there have been many rumors about it, including leaks that appear to show its design. Based on these leaks, it can be expected to be more of an iterative improvement over its predecessor while carrying a similar design philosophy. It will also be backward compatible with the original Nintendo Switch games, something which was confirmed by Nintendo themselves.
Square Enix has always supported Nintendo hardware, although they didn’t manage to bring some of their bigger games like Final Fantasy VII Remake or other graphically heavy releases. They did release Kingdom Hearts on Nintendo Switch, but that was limited to a Cloud version of the game, which received a lot of negative feedback.
Based on the producer’s comments, it appears that Square Enix might have a lot in the pipeline for the Nintendo Switch. Considering the sales success of the original Switch, it is not surprising that developers are excited to see improved hardware which retains all the core features while offering more powerful hardware to run the latest games.
Nintendo has stated that they will announce the Switch successor before the end of their current fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2025.
