Actor Simu Liu, best known for his role as Shang-Chi in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has confirmed he is actively working with rights holders to make a Sleeping Dogs movie. This news has excited fans of the 2012 action-adventure game, which is considered a cult classic.
Sleeping Dogs, developed by United Front Games and published by Square Enix, is set in contemporary Hong Kong. The game follows Wei Shen, a martial artist and undercover police officer, as he infiltrates the Sun On Yee Triad organization. With a mix of martial arts combat, shooting mechanics, parkour, and open-world exploration, the game received critical acclaim and developed a dedicated fanbase. Players have the freedom to roam the vibrant city, engaging in both legal and criminal activities. A dynamic “heat” system regulates police responses based on players’ actions.
The journey to adapt Sleeping Dogs into a film has faced challenges. In March 2017, a live-action adaptation was announced with Neal H. Moritz as producer and Donnie Yen set to star as Wei Shen. However, the project struggled to gain traction. By February 2018, Yen confirmed on social media that the film was in production, but progress stalled. In September 2024, Indonesian director Timo Tjahjanto joined the project, hoping to revive it. Unfortunately, by January 2025, Yen revealed the film was no longer moving forward due to Hollywood production complexities and his personal investment.
Now, Simu Liu has stepped forward with a renewed effort to bring Sleeping Dogs to life. While details remain scarce, Liu’s involvement has sparked optimism among fans. His passion for the project and rising star power could be the catalyst needed to finally get the film off the ground. Liu’s commitment to collaborating with rights holders suggests a fresh approach to navigating the challenges that previously hindered the adaptation.
Given the game’s rich narrative, dynamic characters, and visually stunning setting, a Sleeping Dogs movie has immense potential. If successful, the film could introduce Wei Shen’s story to a broader audience while honoring the legacy of the beloved game.
