A recently discovered Nintendo patent has shed new light on the company’s secretive online playtest game, potentially linking it to key developers from past projects. The patent, published under the number US 20250083046, lists Yusuke Amano, Tsubasa Sakaguchi, Masaki Wada, and Shinya Yano as its inventors. Amano and Sakaguchi previously directed Splatoon, though Sakaguchi later shifted to work on Nintendo Labo. Wada and Yano, meanwhile, contributed as programmers on Ring Fit Adventure.
The patent outlines mechanics related to sandbox-style gameplay, specifically focusing on methods for restricting player actions within a designated area. This function appears designed to prevent griefing—a common issue in multiplayer building games like Minecraft and Roblox. Given the patent’s features, speculation suggests that Nintendo’s ongoing playtest game, which revolves around cooperative planetary development, could be the project utilizing this technology.
Earlier reports indicated that Nintendo had initiated a closed playtest for an undisclosed online game, with access granted through the Nintendo Switch Online: Playtest Program. The project, intended to remain confidential under a strict non-disclosure agreement (NDA), was quickly compromised as some participants leaked footage and streamed gameplay online.
From the leaked footage, the game appears to be a third-person sandbox title akin to Minecraft or Dragon Quest Builders. Players construct large settlements using blocks, with a gameplay loop centered around collaborative planetary development. A key feature involves the use of Beacons, tools that allow players to heal parts of the planet and expand their territory. The world is divided into sections known as Planetary Blocks, and each player manages their own Beacon Zone, where they can build structures and modify their surroundings.
Public zones encourage cooperation, where players gather resources and contribute to large-scale construction projects. However, personal Beacon Zones introduce an element of strategy, as players must safeguard their resources while continuing to expand their influence.
The multiplayer experience appears to center around the Dev Core, a hub where players collect materials, upgrade skills, and interact with others. Advancement is measured through Dev Points, which are earned by contributing to planetary growth. These points help increase the Development Level, unlocking new tools and creative options. Additionally, Connex Points are rewarded for engaging with the game’s community, further encouraging cooperative play.
