Newly surfaced information appears to shed light on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, the unannounced but widely speculated next game from Naughty Dog. The report, based on what is claimed to be hands-on experience with internal builds from February to May of this year, suggests a hybrid of narrative-driven action and exploratory science fiction, rooted in themes of cosmic ruin and religious apocalypse.
Described by the anonymous source as a fusion between The Last of Us Part II and Dark Souls, the game reportedly utilizes a “nested sandbox” design rather than a fully open world. The structure is said to feature expansive zones layered with vertical traversal, gliding segments, parkour mechanics, and a unique fast travel system based on unlocking “faith anchors.”
Combat, according to the leak, offers a high level of responsiveness and strategic depth. Players can reportedly chain movement actions like dashes and jumps into attacks, while enemies can have their limbs targeted and broken to impair their fighting abilities. This mechanic, combined with specialized tools to inflict status effects and an emphasis on enemy weak points, evokes similarities to God of War (2018), though with less reliance on combo juggling.
The protagonist, Jordan A. Mun, a bounty hunter portrayed by Tati Gabrielle, is said to speak using a sparse dialogue wheel. While the player character is mostly alone, the game includes encounters that can be approached in multiple ways, such as stealth, avoidance, negotiation, or even hacking. Optional engagements add to a sense of freedom and unpredictability, suggesting a strong emphasis on player agency.
The narrative backdrop paints a grim picture of a lost world. Set on a planet severed from galactic contact 600 years earlier following a technocult’s global lockdown, the setting draws comparison to Elden Ring in its environmental storytelling. The tone is reportedly steeped in heavy religious and philosophical themes, delivered through a combination of cinematic cutscenes and item-based lore discovery. Writer and creative director Neil Druckmann’s script is described as intense and layered, veering into what the source called “religious apocalypse fanfic meets hard sci-fi.”
The report also mentions dynamic lighting technology that shifts entire levels in response to “planetary phases,” as well as a musical score that ranges from ambient drones to metallic religious choirs and rock, courtesy of composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
One of the more distinct systems involves “Relics,” which reportedly function like character builds. Players can equip two Relics at a time and upgrade them, adding another layer of customization to the gameplay.
Internally, the title is said to be targeting a late 2026 release window, with a full cinematic trailer expected at The Game Awards 2025 if the timeline holds.
Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is being developed for PlayStation 5 by Naughty Dog and will be published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Development began in 2020 following the release of The Last of Us Part II, with Neil Druckmann serving as creative director alongside Matthew Gallant, Kurt Margenau, and narrative director Claire Carré.
