Adi Shankar, the creative visionary behind the acclaimed animated adaptations of Castlevania and Devil May Cry, recently shared his aspirations to revive Capcom’s Dino Crisis franchise.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Shankar provided insights into his 2017 discussions with Capcom, during which he presented a proposal for a revival of the classic survival horror series. While Shankar’s proposal for Dino Crisis was ultimately declined, he unexpectedly acquired the rights to produce an animated series for Devil May Cry, a property he had not anticipated Capcom would make available.
Reflecting on the Dino Crisis franchise, Shankar expressed his admiration for the first two games in the series. He noted that these games successfully combined the atmospheric dread of Resident Evil with the fear-inducing presence of dinosaurs. “Dino Crisis 1 effectively captured the survival horror essence, skillfully blending the tension of Resident Evil with the overwhelming terror of being hunted by dinosaurs—an exceptional achievement,” he remarked, highlighting the original title’s remarkable balance between suspense and horror elements. He continued his analysis, describing Dino Crisis 2 as an exhilarating and fast-paced sequel with engaging level design. However, Shankar acknowledged that Dino Crisis 3, which deviated from the series’ roots by setting it in outer space, ultimately lost the essence of the original.
Shankar elucidated his motivation for pursuing a Dino Crisis reboot, stating that his “mission was clear” when he approached Capcom in 2017. Despite Capcom’s decision to decline the Dino Crisis proposal, Shankar was pleasantly surprised to secure the rights to Devil May Cry. He now views this as an “unfortunate turn of events” and has since dedicated himself to adapting Devil May Cry into an animated series, which has garnered anticipation from fans of both his work and the franchise itself.
Capcom has not yet confirmed the development of a new game in the Dino Crisis series. In recent years, the company has revived most of its major intellectual properties, but fans of Regina and the Dino Crisis franchise have been waiting a long time for the series to make a comeback.
