Independent developer Team Cherry has provided its final instructions to backers ahead of the highly anticipated launch of Hollow Knight: Silksong, confirming a free upgrade for Nintendo Switch 2 users. The developer is preparing to distribute digital keys for the game, which is scheduled to release on September 4, 2025.
As part of the final preparations, the studio has set a 24-hour deadline for backers to complete a survey to finalize their platform of choice. For those who selected a Nintendo platform, the distribution process will be a two-step affair. Backers will first receive a standard Nintendo Switch key via direct email. This key will then be used to redeem a complimentary upgrade package from the Nintendo eShop, which will unlock the enhanced features and optimizations for the newer Switch 2 hardware. This dual-tier system ensures that even those who initially backed the game for the original Switch will be able to play the best version of it on the latest hardware.
The game itself, which evolved from an initial downloadable content concept, has grown into a full-fledged sequel with Hornet as the primary protagonist. It features an entirely new narrative set in the realm of Pharloom, with enhanced traversal mechanics and an expanded bestiary of enemies.
Since the original Hollow Knight’s debut in 2017, the game has been a critical and commercial success, helping to cement Team Cherry’s reputation as a leader in the Metroidvania genre. The sustained interest has remained high despite the lengthy development cycle.
Hollow Knight: Silksong will be released on nine platforms, including Linux, macOS, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The wide-ranging launch strategy is a clear effort by the studio to maximize its market reach and ensure the game is available to as many players as possible. The release is widely seen as a major test case for how a smaller, independent developer can handle the complexities of a large-scale, multi-platform launch while maintaining a consistent level of technical quality.
