Super Smash Bros Ultimate Director Skeptical About Future Titles Matching Its Scope

The Super Smash Bros Ultimate director, Masahiro Sakurai, is skeptical about future titles in the series being able to match its scope.

During a presentation on YouTube regarding the concepts behind Super Smash Bros Ultimate, game director Masahiro Sakurai expressed skepticism over future titles in the series being able to match the game’s scope. He said that he’s unsure about what comes next for the Super Smash series.

Sakurai felt that the development team has truly succeeded in pleasing fans with Super Smash Bros Ultimate. According to him, now that the game has grown to be monstrous in size, it’s difficult to imagine an increase of this magnitude happening again.

That said, Sakurai mentioned that every time he had thought it impossible to achieve such a game, him and the development team managed to pull it off. Therefore, he couldn’t say for certain that there wouldn’t be another, but does believe that it would be difficult to push it any further than the development team has already done so with Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

We would imagine that work on the next Smash Bros game, likely for the Nintendo Switch 2, is already underway, but it makes sense for Sakurai to not mention anything about it.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a 2018 crossover fighting game for the Nintendo Switch, developed by Bandai Namco Studios and Sora Ltd., and published by Nintendo. It’s the fifth installment in the Super Smash Bros. series, following Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U from 2014. The game maintains the series’ traditional gameplay, allowing players to select characters and use attacks to eliminate opponents from the arena. It offers various game modes, including a single-player campaign and multiplayer versus modes. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate features 89 playable fighters, encompassing characters from previous Super Smash Bros. games and new additions, spanning both Nintendo and third-party franchises.
