Rocksteady Studios never pitched or worked on a game based on the Superman IP, according to the latest report.
Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier has reported that Rocksteady never pitched or worked on a Superman game, according to people familiar with the company’s strategy over the last decade. He mentioned that, following the recent previews for the studio’s upcoming Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, fans developed a narrative, based on a rumor, that won’t die.
As per the false rumor, developers at Rocksteady had originally pitched a game about Superman, which was rejected by Warner Bros. and the company was instead forced to work on Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. However, in reality, following the release of Arkham Knight in 2015, the studio began working on a Batman VR game and then an unannounced multiplayer game set in an original franchise. This multiplayer game followed the cancellation of a Suicide Squad game at Warner Bros. Montreal at the end of 2016. Rocksteady took over the Suicide Squad property and commenced work on the current version in 2017.
The rumor about a Rocksteady Superman game seems to have originated from a user named James Sigfield on Twitter/X, who admitted in direct messages to Schreier that he had made a mistake. Despite his correction in a subsequent tweet, the misinformation continue to persist. He mentioned that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League faced setbacks and numerous delays as Rocksteady went through the challenges of transitioning to an unfamiliar genre.
Schreier reminded that, by the time of its release, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will have undergone development for nearly seven years, a duration comparable to Rocksteady’s combined timeline for all three Arkham games.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is an upcoming action shooter game developed by Rocksteady Studios and published by Warner Bros. Games. Serving as the sequel to Batman: Arkham Knight (2015), the game focuses on four supervillains, namely Captain Boomerang, Deadshot, Harley Quinn, and King Shark. Amanda Waller assembles this team, tasking them with stopping the alien invader Brainiac in Metropolis and eliminating the Justice League members who have been brainwashed by him. The game is set for release for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on February 2, 2024.
