Speculation surrounding a standalone Venom game from Insomniac Games has resurfaced following claims that the project was far along in development before being shelved. According to a report by That REDACTED Guy, the game had much of its foundation in place, including combat and traversal systems, a finalized story outline, and even recorded motion capture and dialogue from actor Tony Todd, who voiced Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Despite this progress, the source suggested the title may have been considered too small in scale, and following the data breach at Insomniac, it was ultimately scrapped.
The possibility of a Venom spin-off first emerged after the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 in October 2023. Players were briefly able to control Venom during the main story, and the game’s ending left an open thread involving the symbiote, fueling speculation of a larger standalone project. The leaked internal roadmap from Insomniac’s late 2023 ransomware breach further strengthened this belief, as it listed a Venom game in development, similar in scope to Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
The data breach itself, carried out by the Rhysida ransomware group, had devastating consequences. The attackers released vast amounts of confidential information after Insomniac refused to pay the ransom, including internal corporate documents, personal employee data, and sensitive material related to upcoming games. Among the leaks were early builds, concept art, and long-term release schedules. In response, Sony and Insomniac provided affected employees with extended credit monitoring services and emphasized that the breach would not derail core projects such as Marvel’s Wolverine.
While the Venom game’s existence has never been officially acknowledged by Insomniac, the combination of leaked information and insider claims continues to spark debate among fans. Some remain optimistic that the project could be revived given the character’s popularity and the groundwork already completed, while others fear it may join the list of ideas abandoned after the breach.
At present, neither Sony Interactive Entertainment nor Insomniac Games has commented on the rumored cancellation. Until there is confirmation, the fate of the Venom project remains uncertain, though its shadow continues to loom large over discussions of the future of the Spider-Man franchise.
