A new rumor has surfaced suggesting that Sony Interactive Entertainment may be targeting May 2026 for the release of a significant update for the PlayStation 5 Pro. According to claims attributed to a PlayStation engineer, this update is expected to enhance both visual fidelity and system performance, further refining the capabilities of Sony’s mid-generation console refresh.
Earlier reports had indicated that the PS5 Pro would gain a major upgrade through a planned 2026 SDK update. In an earlier interview with Tom’s Guide, Mark Cerny, PlayStation’s lead architect, discussed how Sony is preparing to introduce FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) on the PS5 Pro. Cerny explained that this feature aims to deliver advanced graphics upscaling, potentially offering a substantial improvement over the currently utilized PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology.
Cerny described the upcoming implementation of FSR 4 as the “full-fat” version of the algorithm developed by AMD. He clarified that this is not a limited or stripped-down adaptation for consoles but the complete algorithm that AMD has already released for PC. The move signals Sony’s intention to maximize the PS5 Pro’s hardware potential by adopting the latest in image enhancement technologies directly from AMD’s research.
Beyond the FSR 4 support, Cerny also spoke about his ongoing work with AMD on future GPU architectures, particularly the RDNA 5 and what he referred to as UDNA. He emphasized that significant portions of the next-generation GPU designs are being shaped by the engineering efforts he is contributing. Importantly, he highlighted that there are no restrictions on how this work can be utilized, hinting at possible benefits not just for the PS5 Pro but perhaps even for future Xbox consoles as well.
Although this rumored May 2026 target for the PS5 Pro update has yet to be officially confirmed, the continuous insights from Sony’s engineering team point toward a steady evolution of the console’s performance profile.
