Sony might be preparing to bring back some of its classic PlayStation franchises, according to Andy Robinson from Video Games Chronicle (VGC). In the latest episode of the VGC podcast, Robinson mentioned that Sony is working on “at least a couple” of old, smaller IPs. Although he didn’t provide specific details, his comments have excited long-time PlayStation fans.
“I know of at least a couple that they’re working on. Like the deep cut, old IP stuff,” Robinson shared on the podcast, hinting at the possible return of lesser-known but beloved franchises.
This fits with earlier statements from Hermen Hulst, the head of PlayStation Studios, about the importance of the company’s large library of IPs. In an interview with Famitsu, Hulst talked about PlayStation’s plan to create new franchises while also looking for chances to revive old IPs. He said, “The numerous IPs that we hold are an important asset for PlayStation. As part of our efforts to strengthen our portfolio, we are not only developing new franchises, but we are also continually looking at opportunities to leverage our legacy IP.”
PlayStation’s history is filled with iconic franchises that have made a lasting impact on gaming culture. Games like Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, Twisted Metal, and Legend of Dragoon are on fans’ wishlists for a comeback. Hulst’s comments have added to the speculation that Sony may be considering reviving these beloved series.
The new report suggests that Sony is focusing on reviving some of their smaller, dormant IPs. However, there is still hope that some of their bigger IPs may also make a return. Among the smaller IPs, Sony has titles like MediEvil, Parappa the Rapper, and LocoRoco. Reviving these games may require less investment, which could make it more feasible for them to bring them back.
