Nightdive Studios Hints at Remastering The Darkness

GIStaffBy GIStaffAugust 27, 2023No Comments2 Mins Read

Nightdive Studios, renowned for reviving abandonware video games, suggests that a remaster of the classic FPS game ‘The Darkness’ is in the works.

Nightdive Studios has carved a niche for itself in the gaming industry by obtaining rights to abandonware video games. They update these games for compatibility with modern platforms and re-release them via digital distribution services. Founded in November 2012 by Stephen and Alix Kick, former video game artists for Sony Online Entertainment, the company has been instrumental in preserving older games. Notably, Nightdive Studios was acquired by Atari SA in May 2023.

Before delving into the potential remaster, it’s essential to understand what “The Darkness” is. Developed by Starbreeze Studios and published by 2K, this first-person shooter was released in 2007 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game is based on the comic book series of the same name, published by Top Cow Productions. It features a blend of modern-day weapons and supernatural powers, offering players a unique gameplay experience. The game was followed by a sequel, “The Darkness II,” in 2012.

The Darkness allows players to wield both conventional firearms and supernatural powers. These powers include summoning creatures called “Darklings,” using tentacles to impale foes, and even creating black holes. The game’s mechanics are designed in such a way that these powers can only be used in dark areas, adding a strategic layer to the gameplay. The game also includes side missions and collectibles, enriching the player’s experience.

Nightdive Studios and The Darkness: A Perfect Match?

Given Nightdive Studios’ expertise in reviving older games, the suggestion that they might remaster “The Darkness” is met with enthusiasm. The studio has a track record of successful remasters, including the re-release of “System Shock 2” via GOG.com in February 2013. Their focus on updating games for modern platforms while preserving their original essence makes them an ideal candidate for bringing “The Darkness” back to life.

A remastered version of “The Darkness” could introduce this classic to a new generation of gamers, with updated graphics, improved gameplay mechanics, and perhaps even additional content, while still satisfying the nostalgia of those who played the original due to its unique blend of conventional and supernatural elements.
