NetEase Games has announced that its free-to-play third-person shooter, Marvel Rivals, will be released on PlayStation 4 on September 12. The expansion to the last-generation console will launch alongside the game’s fourth major content update, which is titled “The Heart of the Dragon.”
The upcoming Season 4 update promises a rich narrative centered on the Timestream Entanglement event. This phenomenon has led to the unification of the Seven Capitals into a single, celestial entity known as the Heart of Heaven. The storyline will follow the imprisonment of the Asgardian goddess Hela, who, after her defeat by the symbiote deity Knull, finds herself in the mysterious An’Hay-Zhidi. There, she will encounter Dizang, the Devil of the Eighth City, who challenges her to atone for her past misdeeds.
The seasonal plot will introduce character conflicts, notably between Angela and Hela, but the primary threat will emerge from Doctor Doom. His ambition to acquire the Chronal Chi from the dormant dragon Shou-Lao could destabilize the entire realm. To counter this, Iron Fist will emerge as a key player in the narrative, tasked with protecting the Immortal Dragon from Doom’s sinister plans.
Marvel Rivals first launched on December 6, 2024, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. This expansion to the PlayStation 4 is a strategic move by NetEase Games to broaden its player base and make the game accessible to users who have yet to upgrade to the latest gaming hardware. The simultaneous launch of the new season and the PS4 version highlights the company’s commitment to keeping players engaged across all supported platforms while also attracting new players with fresh content.
