Koei Tecmo and developer Team Ninja have revealed that Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly will receive a full remake, with release planned for early 2026. The announcement was made on September 12, 2025, alongside the debut of the game’s first teaser trailer. The remake is currently in development for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC via Steam.
The project revisits the second entry in the Fatal Frame series, first released in 2003 on the PlayStation 2. Known as Project Zero II: Crimson Butterfly in some regions, the title is regarded as one of the most critically acclaimed installments of the franchise. The story follows twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura as they stumble into a mysterious village shrouded in eternal night, where they encounter restless spirits and a forbidden ritual.
As in the original, players will rely on the Camera Obscura, a supernatural device that captures and weakens spirits through photography, serving as the central tool for both combat and progression. Koei Tecmo confirmed that the remake will feature significant updates to visuals, audio design, and gameplay systems, including revised controls to reflect modern standards.
While the company highlighted these improvements, it has not yet disclosed whether the remake will add new narrative content or expand on the original’s branching endings. The confirmed language options include Japanese voice acting with subtitles in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.
The announcement underscores Koei Tecmo’s renewed focus on its horror properties, following the release of Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse in 2023, which was previously limited to Japan. The remake of Crimson Butterfly may signal broader efforts to reintroduce the series to international audiences.
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is expected to launch in early 2026. Further details, including a release date and additional gameplay footage, are likely to follow in the coming months.
