Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Set for February 2026 Release

Square Enix has announced that Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, a new version of the 2000 role-playing game Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, will launch worldwide on February 5, 2026. The game will be available on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam and the Microsoft Store. The announcement was made during Nintendo’s latest Direct presentation on September 12.

According to Square Enix, the upcoming title preserves the core story of the original but introduces an updated art style, refined pacing, and gameplay adjustments intended to modernize the experience for new players. The game follows a group of characters who travel across multiple islands, gradually uncovering the narrative through exploration and the discovery of fragments that unlock new areas.

The visual presentation has been reworked using physical models, giving environments and characters a diorama-like appearance. Designs originally created by manga artist Akira Toriyama have been adapted into 3D figures to create what Square Enix describes as a “hand-crafted” aesthetic.

Gameplay changes include an updated turn-based combat system. New mechanics such as “Moonlighting,” which allows a character to combine two vocations, and “Let Loose,” a combat ability triggered by heightened character states, will be introduced. A new vocation, “Monster Master,” adds the ability to summon monsters during battles. Square Enix also confirmed various quality-of-life improvements, including an updated interface.

In addition to the standard release, the company is preparing several editions of the game. A physical Collector’s Edition, available exclusively through the Square Enix online store, includes a steelbook case, a plush toy, a figurine, and downloadable content packs. A Digital Deluxe Edition will feature 48 hours of early access, exclusive costumes, and additional downloadable content. Pre-orders for all versions opened on September 12.

Players who purchase the game ahead of launch will receive early bonuses, including a costume from Dragon Quest VIII for the protagonist and three in-game items designed to improve character statistics. Square Enix also confirmed platform-specific digital rewards, such as a unique “Slime Shield.”

Dragon Quest VII remains one of the most expansive entries in the long-running franchise, known for its extensive story and class-based combat system. The 2026 release will mark the first full-scale remake of the title since its Nintendo 3DS version in 2013.
