Take-Two’s Strauss Zelnick on Nintendo’s Switch Successor: “Never Count Nintendo Out”

In a recent interview, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick discussed Nintendo’s upcoming Switch successor, the “Switch 2.” He expressed confidence in Nintendo’s future and addressed backward compatibility’s impact on Take-Two’s extensive game library.

Nintendo confirmed this week that the “Switch 2” will have backward compatibility, allowing players to transfer their existing Switch games. This decision will enhance Nintendo’s player base and boost sales on the new platform.

Zelnick emphasized the value of backward compatibility for publishers with robust game libraries, highlighting Take-Two’s position as having the highest-selling catalogue per SKU in the industry. This compatibility ensures that established Switch titles, including Take-Two’s popular franchises, will continue to reach audiences on the new device.

“You’re always competing with everything, and you’re competing with yourself, ” said Zelnick. “Also, backward compatibility is good for our catalogue, and we think we have the highest selling catalogue per SKU in the business.”

When asked about his expectations for the next-generation Nintendo console, Zelnick acknowledged Nintendo’s remarkable track record and expressed confidence in its ability to innovate and captivate players. “I never count Nintendo out, ” remarked Zelnick.

Take-Two Interactive has seen significant success on the Switch, with hit franchises like NBA 2K, BioShock, and Borderlands generating substantial sales. Given the enduring popularity of these titles and Take-Two’s extensive catalogue, the Switch successor’s backward compatibility has the potential to extend its lifespan, reaching both new players and existing fans.
