Larian Studios Scrapped a Partially Playable Baldur’s Gate 4 During Development

Larian Studios developed Baldur’s Gate 4 before deciding to discontinue the project. In a recent interview with PC Gamer, Larian CEO Swen Vincke provided insights into the studio’s decision-making process and the factors that contributed to the abandonment of the highly anticipated sequel.

Following the success of Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian Studios encountered significant pressure to continue the series. Vincke explained, “So if something is super successful, obviously everyone’s [asking] you, ‘When are you going to make the next one?” This external pressure, combined with the developers emerging from an intense development period, left the team in a vulnerable state.

Initially, Larian did not intend to create Baldur’s Gate 4 but rather an expansion for Baldur’s Gate 3. This approach seemed logical as the production pipeline was still active, and the engine and other resources were readily available. Progress was swift, with the team capitalizing on the existing framework. However, as the project evolved into a full-fledged new game, the scope expanded significantly.

Vincke and his team soon realized that dedicating three years to this expansion might not be the best use of their time and resources. As a result, the project was retooled as Baldur’s Gate 4. Despite making substantial progress and achieving a partially playable state, the team ultimately reconsidered the project’s viability.

When the proposal to discontinue Baldur’s Gate 4 was raised, the developers reached a consensus to move on from the project. “Sadly, it sounds like we are really missing out, as Baldur’s Gate 4 was in a partially playable state, and players would have really loved it,” Vincke remarked.

Vincke also mentioned that Larian Studios’ next game will not be set in the Forgotten Realms, indicating a shift in focus for the developer.

What are your thoughts on Larian’s decision to scrap Baldur’s Gate 4? Are you excited about their future projects outside the Forgotten Realms? Share your opinions in the comments below.
