Konami Explains Why Snake Eater Was Chosen for Remake Over Metal Gear Solid 1

Konami has revealed that remaking Metal Gear Solid 1 would be significantly more complex than the upcoming remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. According to Metal Gear Solid series producer Noriaki Okamura, recreating the first game, or even earlier titles such as Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2, would demand the development of many new components, making it a much larger endeavor than the relatively faithful adaptation of Snake Eater.

In a recent interview with Famitsu, Okamura discussed the challenges of remaking earlier titles in the franchise. While Konami is not ruling out the possibility of these remakes, Okamura made it clear that they would be significantly different from the Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater project. “If we were to remake Metal Gear Solid or Metal Gear 1/2, we couldn’t do it in the same way as MGS Delta. We would have to create many new parts,” he explained. The task of modernizing these classics would require not just visual updates but substantial reworking of gameplay elements to meet contemporary standards.

As for the future of the Metal Gear series, Okamura indicated that Konami is contemplating the next steps, though any decisions will depend on the public’s reception of Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater. “We are thinking about if it’s okay to make the next game in the series, but we will think about the next steps after getting feedback for Metal Gear Solid Delta,” Okamura said.

While fans may be eager for new installments or remakes of earlier titles, Konami appears to be focused on preserving the legacy of the series. The company is currently working on ensuring the longevity of Metal Gear, with Okamura emphasizing the need to preserve the series’ heritage. “Before everyone who was involved in the original is gone, we need to create a path to preserve the Metal Gear series for 10 or 50 years into the future. I think this is something we have to do,” he stated.

Konami has already taken steps in this direction with the release of Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection, Volume 1, which includes the first five games in the series: Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Volume 2 is also in development and will bring Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, previously a PlayStation 3 exclusive, to modern platforms.
