Ghost of Tsushima Sequel Featuring Jin Sakai Was Cancelled in Favor of Ghost of Yōtei, Reports Suggest

JoelBy JoelOctober 3, 2024No Comments2 Mins Read

Sucker Punch Productions initially began working on a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, but the project was ultimately scrapped, and the assets were later repurposed for a new game titled Ghost of Yotei. This information comes from a recent report suggesting that the game’s direction changed significantly during its early development stages.

Following the successful launch of Ghost of Tsushima, Sucker Punch greenlit a sequel two months after the first game’s release, once sales data confirmed its commercial success. While the main development team moved on to other projects, a smaller team remained focused on the Ghost of Tsushima: Legends multiplayer mode and additional DLC content, which was eventually included in the PC and PS5 versions of the game.

Originally, Ghost of Tsushima 2 was intended to continue the story of Jin Sakai. However, in Ghost of Yotei, the heroine is a new character named Atsu. The report indicates that Sucker Punch utilized the assets they had initially created for the sequel to develop this new project within the Ghost of Tsushima universe.

The report also hints at significant changes within the studio, with some of the original talent from Ghost of Tsushima allegedly leaving Sucker Punch. However, this claim is speculative and should be approached cautiously. The team responsible for the Ghost of Tsushima DLC is now leading development on Ghost of Yotei, while the original team is working on another project within the studio.

This development structure is not unusual for PlayStation Studios, as other developers such as Naughty Dog, Sony Santa Monica, and Guerrilla Games have similarly managed multiple projects. While Ghost of Yotei is currently slated for release in 2025, the report suggests the game is far from completion, raising the possibility of delays in the future.

Additionally, the report outlines details about the scrapped sequel to Ghost of Tsushima. The follow-up was described as similar in style to Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, featuring Jin Sakai leading a “brotherhood of Ghosts” as he ventured further into mainland Japan. The game would have included large-scale cinematic battles involving multiple Ghosts, drawing inspiration from the Assassin’s Creed series in terms of its structure and scale.

Currently, Ghost of Yotei is set for a 2025 release and will be exclusive to the PlayStation 5. However, given the development status and the scope of the project, fans may need to prepare for potential delays before its official release.
