According to the LinkedIn profile of Chris Chung, the World of Tanks franchise director, the online mutiplayer game series has generated a total of 7 billion US Dollars in revenue as of 2024.
As per Chung’s resume,
For the uninitiated, World of Tanks is a multiplayer online game that features combat vehicles from the 1910s to the 1970s. The game operates on a freemium model, allowing free play with optional fees for “premium” features. It emphasizes player vs. player gameplay, with each participant controlling an armored vehicle spanning the Pre-World War 2 to Cold War eras. Players select a single armored tank or self-propelled artillery vehicle for battles on random maps. Players control the vehicle’s movement and firing, with communication options via typed or voice chat.
A standard match is won by either destroying all vehicles on the opposing team or capturing the enemy base without damage for a sufficient duration. While various game modes exist, core gameplay mechanics, including camouflage, shell ricochets, and module and personnel damage, remain constant in World of Tanks. The game offers players six main types of battles: random battles, team-training battles, tank-company battles, team battles, stronghold battles, and special battles. In random battles, players can form platoons, consisting of two or three players placed on the same team. Each game mode features missions with different reward levels. A random battle involves up to 15v15 players, and bots may be employed to fill any gaps.
