Capcom’s Monster Hunter Wilds has made an explosive debut, setting new records in the U.S. gaming market. According to Circana (NPD) analyst Mat Piscatella, the title’s launch week dollar sales were the largest since Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. Notably, PC was the lead platform, with Steam accounting for more than half of the game’s total dollar sales.
Monster Hunter Wilds Dominates February Sales Charts
In a series of posts on BlueSky, Piscatella revealed that Monster Hunter Wilds was the best-selling game of February across all major platforms—PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam. The game’s launch month sales more than doubled those of Monster Hunter Rise, which debuted in March 2021.
The success of Monster Hunter Wilds also contributed to February’s top-selling games being led by new releases. Joining it in the top four were:
- Kingdom Come: Deliverance II
- Sid Meier’s Civilization VII
- PGA Tour 2K25
Other notable new releases making the top ten included Avowed (7th place) and Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii (8th place).
A Strong but Declining U.S. Market in February
Despite Monster Hunter Wilds’ record-setting performance, overall U.S. video game market spending in February declined by 6% year-over-year (YoY), totaling $4.5 billion. According to Circana’s report:
- Video game content spending fell by 4% YoY, reaching $4.0 billion.
- Subscription revenue grew by 9%, but declines were seen across:
- Mobile (-4%)
- Console full game and add-on content (-11%)
- PC, Cloud, and Non-Console VR (-4%)
Additionally, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II also saw significant success, with its launch month dollar sales being more than five times higher than its predecessor’s February 2018 debut.
Released on February 28, 2025, for Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, Monster Hunter Wilds serves as the successor to Monster Hunter: World (2018). The game supports cross-platform play, allowing players across different systems to hunt together seamlessly.
