Microsoft Registers New Gears of War Trademark Amidst Rumors of New Remastered Collection

JoelBy JoelSeptember 24, 2022No Comments2 Mins Read

Microsoft has registered a new Gears of War trademark related to video games. This could suggest they plan on a new game in the series.

Gears of War title was changed to Gears beginning with the 5th entry in the series. It was named Gears 5 marking a name change for the series. However, based on the new trademark, Microsoft might go back to using Gears of War as the game name going forward.

The trademark can be found here. It is registered for the gaming category which covers “categories of tabletop games; board games; card games; trading card games; arcade games.” It was filed on September 20.

There have been quite a few rumors that suggest that the GEOW series could be getting a definitive collection in the same vein as Halo: The Master Chief Collection. This is the best way to play all of the Halo games, for now, both on PC and Xbox consoles.

Gears of War 1 is the only game in the series to have received a remaster from Microsoft. The rest of the games are all playable on Xbox consoles through backward compatibility and with enhancements including 60 FPS and 4K support on select titles. There is no native Xbox One version of Gears of War 2, 3, and Judgement available on the consoles. Gears of War 4 and 5 are both native Xbox One releases with enhancements including 4K, and 60 FPS for the current-generation consoles.

Gears of War is only available for PC and Xbox consoles. It is one of the most prominent franchises from Microsoft after Halo. A new game in the series might be in development at The Coalition, who have worked on new games in the franchise since Gears 4. They are currently working with Unreal Engine 5 while the older entries in the series used Unreal Engine 3 or 4. The initial trilogy was developed by Epic Games under the direction of Cliff Bleszinski.
