Upcoming DLC for Insomniac Games’ latest web-swinging adventure, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, featuring Beetle has potentially leaked ahead of an official announcement.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 game files were allegedly discovered in the stolen data obtained from Insomniac Games via a ransomware hack, among which is mention of a potential Beetle DLC.
The files include mention of Janice as well as a list of missions along with XP Rewards for completing missions. In the Spider-Man lore, the character Janice Lincoln, who is Tombstone’s daughter, becomes the supervillainess known as Beetle. She grew up with her father’s sporadic presence, mainly helping with bills and schooling. Despite idolizing her father’s criminal activities, she was forbidden from participating in them. After establishing a successful career as a defense attorney, Janice defended Baron Zemo and later volunteered to become Beetle.
If this data is indeed from the stolen Insomniac Games files, it’s highly likely that DLC featuring Beetle as the villain is indeed in development at the studio.
Previously, it was reported that Insomniac Games had been hit by an attack from ransomware operator Rhysida. The ransomware gang had initially shared limited data online that appeared to back its claim. The gang’s proof-of-hack included a screenshots and character art related to other Marvel characters that may be featured in Marvel’s Wolverine. Additionally, passport scans of Insomniac employees, including a recent Disney hire who was laid off by the developer two months ago, were also shared.
Personal documents of Yuri Lowenthal, the voice actor for Peter Parker in Marvel’s Spider-Man series, are also among the materials. Internal emails and signed confidential documents are also presented as part of the proof-of-hack. The Rhysida gang had given Insomniac a seven-day ultimatum before releasing the complete data set. Concurrently, they conducted an auction for the data, starting at 50 bitcoins, equivalent to just over US$2 million.
