New gameplay details and the potential release window for Ikumi Nakamura’s upcoming game, Kemuri, have been revealed.
In IGN’s behind-the-scenes coverage for Kemuri, creative director Ikumi Nakamura and other members of the development team at Unseen Tokyo revealed new details regarding the game, including its potential release window. It is a supernatural, online co-op PVE action game that can be played both solo and online
In Kemuri, players will assume the role of a yokai hunter who has the ability to blend the real world with supernatural wonders that exist just beyond the vision of ordinary people. They will use acrobatic movement and traversal to explore a dense and chaotic city with plenty of verticality. In terms of aesthetics, Kemuri will feature an anime-inspired art style with key framed animations.
The game is said to be inspired by early PS1 and Dreamcast titles, though it comes with its own modern twist. As the yokai hunter, players will be able to use their “fox window” to look into the yokai world and uncover the source of problems. They will also engage in battles, negotiations, and acquire yokai to alter their appearance to unlock new powers. The game is also said to feature boss battles.
As for a possible release window for Kemuri, the development team at Unseen Tokyo stated that it is “a bit further down the road”, suggesting that it will likely see the light of day sometime in 2025.
According to its official website, Kemuri’s world is a blend of traditional Japanese folklore, modern culture, anime aesthetics and international flair where supernatural wonders exist just beyond the vision of ordinary people. It summons you into a realm where the unpredictable meets the extraordinary in an urban jungle where mysterious creatures i.e. yokai, hide amongst the population. This world challenges yokai hunters to confront existential themes and moral dilemmas as they track and fight their prey in fast paced combat.
