Sega’s upcoming reboot of its racing game, Crazy Taxi, will be a Game As A Service title, based on the latest rumor.

According to the well-known Sega insider known as Midori, the upcoming Crazy Taxi reboot is modeled after AAA live service games, such as Fortnite. They mentioned that the developer plans for the game to feature live events, collaborations and customizations.

The insider claims that Sega’s current plan is to work on a live service GAAS reboot as well as a remake of original Crazy Taxi. A survival mode with up to 100 players is said to be planned for the reboot. Fortnite and GTA Online are said to be the main inspiration behind the Crazy Taxi reboot.

According to Midori, Sega intends to be competitive in the live service market by using classic IPs in new ways with new technologies. They added that Crazy Taxi isn’t the only reboot that will be a live service GAAS title. The publisher has similar plans for the Jet Set Radio, whereby both a remake and a GAAS reboot will see the light of day. The insider claims that the Jet Set Radio reboot is similar in gameplay to Fortnite, as it will be a third-person shooter. The game is said to feature an open world with exploration being a major focus.

Crazy Taxi is a racing video game developed and published by Sega. It was initially released in arcades in 1999 and later made available on the Dreamcast in 2000. The gameplay revolves around picking up taxi customers and delivering them to their destinations swiftly. Reception has generally been positive, leading to ports on various platforms such as PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Windows.

Players aim to pick up customers and transport them quickly to their chosen locations, earning money by performing stunts like near misses with other vehicles. A large green arrow guides players to the destination, which doesn’t adjust for obstacles. Upon arrival, players must stop within a designated area to complete the fare. Ratings are given based on completion time, and if the customer’s timer expires before reaching the destination, they’ll exit the taxi without payment.
