Bloober Team Aims to Revitalize Horror Genre on Nintendo Platforms

Polish game developer Bloober Team is embarking on a new strategic initiative to reinvigorate the horror genre on Nintendo’s consoles. The studio, known for titles like Layers of Fear and the recent Silent Hill 2 remake, seeks to become a leading force for mature content on the platform, which has traditionally been associated with family-friendly games.

As part of this effort, Bloober Team will launch its upcoming title, Cronos: The New Dawn, on the Nintendo Switch 2 next week, on September 5. The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Piotr Babieno, shared his vision for this venture in a recent interview with industry publication, The Game Business. He drew parallels to the Nintendo GameCube era, which he noted was a “gold time for Nintendo fans” due to the presence of popular horror games such as Eternal Darkness and various Resident Evil installments.

“The most important horrors were available on Nintendo GameCube,” Babieno said, expressing his personal dedication to the initiative as a long-time Nintendo fan himself. He stated his goal is to “open a new chapter” for horror on Nintendo’s systems, believing that mature and family-friendly content can coexist successfully. To that point, he cited Luigi’s Mansion as a prime example of Nintendo’s own ability to blend horror elements with accessible gameplay.

While many in the gaming industry have faced a wave of layoffs, Bloober Team has maintained a steady workforce of 250 employees by focusing on controlled growth. Babieno stated that the company limits active development to just two concurrent projects, a strategy intended to preserve creative quality and the studio’s identity.

The executive also weighed in on the wider resurgence of the horror genre, noting that titles like Resident Evil 9 and Silent Hill F are generating significant buzz. He linked this renewed interest to global uncertainty, pointing out a historical trend that connects societal challenges with the popularity of horror entertainment.

The launch of Cronos: The New Dawn on the Nintendo Switch 2 is a calculated effort to establish a solid market presence, and it may well influence the future strategies for mature content on the console.
