Assassin’s Creed Shadows to Focus on Exploration With Fewer Map Icons, Says Ubisoft

Ubisoft’s upcoming release, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, aims to boldly change the series’ exploration mechanics. In its latest update, the developer shared details on how the game will abandon traditional map markers and focus on a more organic, player-driven exploration experience. Shadows, slated for release on March 20, promises to reward discovery and curiosity as players navigate its expansive open world.

In a blog post, Ubisoft explained that Shadows introduces significant changes to exploration to create a “unique sense of discovery.” Instead of overwhelming players with pre-marked points of interest, the world map begins with only region names and vague hints. More details are unlocked as players explore, gather intel, or interact with NPCs. Notably, scouts can now be deployed to uncover precise quest locations, adding a strategic layer to exploration.

Classic Assassin’s Creed features also receive an overhaul. Viewpoints, for example, no longer reveal a clutter of icons but instead highlight nearby key locations that players can tag manually. The traditional eagle companion has been replaced by a manual tagging system, encouraging players to find vantage points and observe their surroundings for a more immersive experience.

Another innovation is the introduction of safe houses, or “kakurega.” These provide safe fast travel points, a place to restock resources, manage allies, and accept contracts. Fast travel is also available from discovered viewpoints, although these are often in dangerous zones, requiring players to weigh the risks of using them.

The new Pathfinder tool offers practical assistance by guiding players along the shortest route to marked destinations, accounting for the increased presence of unclimbable terrain. This feature ensures efficient travel across the game’s intricate landscapes while maintaining a focus on exploration.

Adding to the immersion, the Objective Board—a visual quest log introduced in Assassin’s Creed Mirage—returns with enhancements. Instead of explicitly stating objectives, it presents clues for players to piece together, fostering a sense of discovery and accomplishment.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is set for March 20, following a delay from February. It will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
