Back to the Dawn is a prison escape and life simulation RPG by Metal Head Games, published by Spiral Up Games. Originally launched in Early Access on November 3, 2023, the game blends faction politics, conspiracies, and strategic escapes in a world populated by anthropomorphic characters. Players primarily control Thomas the Fox, with other characters expected in future updates.
Among its many challenges, the ultimate goal in Back to the Dawn is to find a way out of the high-security prison. The game features multiple escape routes, each with its own set of tasks, character interactions, and dangers. This guide covers all currently known escape paths, some requiring careful planning and others brute force or clever tactics. Please note that spoilers are included.
1. The Roof Route
To attempt the rooftop escape, players need to unlock roof work and complete the roof decryption task. This involves reading the three King’s Series books, accessing the pipeline area via the toilet, and disabling the roof exhaust fan — selecting the third option from the top when prompted.
From there, climb the water tower and craft a glider using the following materials:
- 3 sheets
- 2 long screws
- 2 iron sheets
- 8 thin wooden poles
- 8 shoelaces
After assembling the glider, players can soar off the roof to freedom.
2. The Canteen Route
This method requires unlocking kitchen work and completing three prerequisite tasks for the character known as the Lion — drawing maps, acquiring lipstick, and securing a baseball bat. During the prison riot, which occurs on the Wednesday of the third week, confront the Lion in the kitchen and knock him out. Escape while the riot provides cover.
3. The Hospital Route
Though combat-free, this escape path demands precise timing and several strict checks. Begin by digging through the washbasin and solving the sewer decryption puzzle. Enter the operating room through the sewer, move a hospital bed to inspect the ceiling, and trigger the escape quest.
During the day, gain access to the hospital by assisting the nurses — this can be done by taking laxatives or obtaining prescribed medication. Apply corrosive solution to damage the sink. At night, return to climb the signal tower and escape.
Some players report alternative methods, such as using a hacking skill to bypass the need for corrosive solution.
4. The Sewage Pipeline Route
Arguably the toughest escape, this path pits players against the strongest boss in the game. After decrypting the laundry room, unlock the sewage room and open its valve. Players may also access the sewer at night by traveling through the square.
Once inside the pipeline, confront the giant crab boss. Be prepared, as poison gas within the tunnel drains health — ten points per exposure, or five with a gas mask equipped. After defeating the crab, follow the path to freedom.
5. The Poopy Pendant Route
This route begins after starting the Poopy Pendant quest. Head to the sewer’s left room, open the top right tank using either a high Strength stat or specific tools, and discover Lisa’s body along with the TC-13 clue. Gather evidence from the mailroom and guard room, then confront Billy. You will need to negotiate with Alex for funds, with the amount varying based on previous quests. This route requires multiple investigative steps and careful dialogue choices.
6. The Boxing Ring Route
Win all four boxing matches, write a prison review, and avoid accusing Billy during Lisa’s storyline. Doing this grants access to an underground boxing ring for three tough matches. After your final victory, move the wine table and red trashcan near the vent in the post-match room. Open the grate with your trophy, using Strength and Architect skill checks. Successfully completing a quick-time event leads to escape.
7. The Deal with the Devil Route
Drain the sewers and break a brick wall in the southern section. Inside, find a barbershop and defeat its owner in a difficult fight. Learn about his smuggling partner, known as the Devil. Build a rope, befriend the Devil by playing ball or offering noodles until max relationship, and fill a small oxygen tank in the infirmary’s locked area. Once ready, visit the Devil whenever you choose to escape.
Important Note on Story Progression
While players are free to choose their escape route, it is highly recommended to complete the main questline and collect the mayor’s recorded evidence before making your move. Only by gathering this evidence can you fully expose the corrupt mayor. Cameras and flash devices can also assist during combat if obtained beforehand.
