Leaked details about the upcoming Resident Evil IX, tentatively titled Resident Evil Extinction, have surfaced online. They offer a comprehensive look into the setting, characters, and gameplay mechanics. According to the leaks, the game takes place on “Tierra del Fuego,” a fictional island in Southeast Asia. The setting was inspired by the real Japanese volcanic island of Miyake-jima, known for its poisonous volcanic gases that force inhabitants to wear gas masks.
The village and town structures in Resident Evil IX: Extinction is said to feature a mix of cultural influences from 11 countries in Southeast Asia, blending architecture and traditions into a setting that reflects the region’s diversity. The game’s primary biological threat will be the White Mold, a new variation of the Mold organism previously seen in Resident Evil 7 and Village. This White Mold is reportedly based on the real-life Torrubiella fungus, which overtakes insects by gradually consuming their bodies. In the game, victims of the White Mold experience severe physical and mental deterioration, and once fully infected, they transform into monstrous creatures resembling mythological beings from Southeast Asian folklore.
Players will assume the role of Adrian Clark, a tourist who arrives on the island with his wife and son, only to witness his wife’s murder by locals and his son’s mysterious abduction. The game’s plot follows Adrian as he embarks on a desperate search to rescue his child. Resident Evil Extinction will also see the return of iconic characters from the series, including Leon Kennedy, who plays an episodic role in assisting Adrian. Leon, now in his 50s, appears more frequently than Chris Redfield did in Resident Evil Village, and other series mainstays such as Chris, Jill, and Claire are expected to appear, though mostly behind the scenes, with their stories likely explored in post-launch DLC.
The game will feature first-person gameplay, but after completing the story, players will have access to an over-the-shoulder (OTS) perspective. It has been confirmed that DLC involving well-known characters will only be available in OTS mode. The narrative will heavily involve the island’s volcano, which is tied to ancient extremophiles—organisms worshipped by the island’s inhabitants. These extremophiles have the potential to enhance the White Mold, drawing the interest of two major factions in the game, The Connections, and the BSAA.
The BSAA, now under the control of Blue Umbrella, has become a corrupt entity, and Blue Umbrella is reportedly involved in supplying bio-organic weapons (BOW soldiers) to various countries. As a result, the world in Resident Evil Extinction is teetering on the edge of apocalypse, a theme strongly hinted at throughout the game.
Resident Evil IX: Extinction is being developed using the advanced REX Engine, ensuring high-quality visuals and immersive gameplay. An announcement is expected in the first half of 2025, with a planned release date in early 2026. The game will support PSVR2.
