Hogwarts Legacy Hits 30 Million Sales, Warner Bros. Confirms Sequel Development Is “High Priority”

Warner Bros. Games confirmed that Hogwarts Legacy, the open-world action RPG set in the Wizarding World, sold 30 million copies since its release, making it the best-selling game of 2023. This milestone prompted Warner Bros. to start working on a Hogwarts Legacy sequel, which is a high priority for Warner Bros. Discovery’s executive leadership.

Hogwarts Legacy’s success has led to a surge in Wizarding World projects, including Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions and a remastered Lego Harry Potter collection. Warner Bros. has also licensed mobile games based on the Harry Potter universe. David Haddad, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, noted that the enduring enthusiasm for Hogwarts Legacy and related titles comes from a dedicated fan base of all ages.

Warner Bros. Games has partnered with Warner Bros. Television to align certain narrative elements of the upcoming Hogwarts Legacy sequel with the Harry Potter HBO series. Haddad emphasized the success of Hogwarts Legacy as proof of the enduring appeal of the Harry Potter franchise, which influenced Warner Bros. Discovery’s decision to expand the Wizarding World’s multimedia presence. J.K. Rowling, the series creator, doesn’t directly oversee the franchise’s expansions, but Warner Bros. Discovery maintains open communication with her through her literary agent.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has been a tremendous success for Warner Bros. The studio adapted all of the books into movies, which have collectively generated over $7 billion in worldwide box office revenue while operating on a budget of less than $1.5 billion. This makes it an exceptionally profitable franchise for the studio.

Hogwarts Legacy was initially released for the PS5, Xbox Series S|X, and PC and subsequently ported to the PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. It quickly became one of the year’s best-selling titles and continued to perform well in sales even after its launch. It was developed by Avalanche Software and published by Warner Bros. Games under their Portkey Games label.
