Bungie reportedly shifting to lighter content updates for Destiny 2, moving away from large expansions. Additionally, the rumored Destiny project ‘Payback’ has been canceled.
Bungie recently experienced layoffs, raising concerns about the future of the Destiny series. Industry insider Jeff Grubb revealed that players should expect “lighter” and “smaller” content drops for Destiny 2, signaling a shift away from the substantial expansions that have traditionally defined the game’s updates.
According to Jeff Grubb, speaking on Game Mess Mornings, Bungie remains committed to supporting Destiny 2 but plans to shift towards more streamlined and less resource-intensive updates, which they internally refer to as “content packs.” This change means that future updates will require less development time and fewer resources compared to previous expansions like The Final Shape.
Grubb stated, “They’re going to keep making new content for Destiny 2. The expectation internally is that the future content will be lighter, smaller, to take less time than what The Final Shape did, and require fewer people.”
While these content packs will still provide new experiences for players, they will differ from the expansive updates fans have come to expect. Grubb noted, “There will be expansions and updates, but they will be sort of—not a shell of their former selves, but they’ll definitely have that vibe about them.” Bungie has already stopped using the term “expansions” internally, preferring “content packs” to describe these updates.
In addition to the shift in content strategy, Bungie has reportedly canceled the rumored Destiny project codenamed ‘Payback,’ which many believed to be Destiny 3. Earlier speculation suggested that Bungie was working on a new Destiny game under the codename ‘Payback,’ generating excitement among fans for new adventures in the Destiny universe.
However, journalist Jason Schreier clarified the situation, stating, “Just to clear up some rumors floating around, Destiny 3 was not canceled because it was never in development, per people familiar. Bungie did some very early work on a spinoff project called Payback, but they canceled that a while ago.”
Schreier’s comments confirm that while there was early work on a spinoff project, Destiny 3 was never in development. He also mentioned that more information would be forthcoming, promising further details on the matter.
