Baldur’s Gate 3 has received significant critical acclaim and numerous prestigious awards. However, this heightened recognition has presented some challenges for the development pf ongoing projects. In a recent interview with Edge, Larian CEO and Baldur’s Gate 3 director Swen Vincke discussed the impact of the game’s remarkable success on ongoing development.
While the success has been truly gratifying, it has also introduced logistical obstacles for Larian Studios. Vincke explained that the substantial volume of awards has required developers to attend numerous ceremonies, taking a toll on the development team.
Vincke disclosed that the frequent attendance at award shows had disrupted the development workflow. Initially manageable, the need to send a team to collect awards became increasingly challenging as the game continued to receive accolades. Larian had to implement a strategy of rotating teams to different ceremonies to ensure that development work could proceed while acknowledging the game’s acclaim.
Despite these challenges, Larian Studios remains committed to maintaining the high standards set by Baldur’s Gate 3. Vincke emphasized that the team is dedicated to both celebrating their achievements and continuing to deliver exceptional content.
The consistent travel and participation in award ceremonies have unexpectedly drained the team. Vincke suggested that it would be advantageous if all award shows could be consolidated into a single event to alleviate the strain on the team. The continuous recognition has also made it difficult for the team to find closure on the project, maintaining heightened emotions and hindering the transition to new endeavors.
Despite the challenges, Vincke remains optimistic about the future. Larian Studios is actively involved in the development of two new RPG projects, and the team is eager to shift its focus to these forthcoming titles.
