Koei Tecmo’s newest action game, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, has landed at the top of the Japanese sales charts, according to Famitsu’s retail data for the week of November 3–9, 2025. The Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive moved 73,183 copies in its first week, making for a solid launch for the newest entry in the Hyrule Warriors series and helping to spur a significant rise in hardware sales for Nintendo’s latest console.
The new spin-off, crafted by Koei Tecmo’s AAA Games Studio alongside Nintendo, acts as a direct prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Set during the ancient Imprisoning War, the game has Princess Zelda and the legendary Sages battling Ganondorf’s forces across a huge, war-torn version of Hyrule. Expanding on the systems featured in Tears of the Kingdom, Age of Imprisonment brings in dynamic “Sync Strikes,” which are cooperative combination attacks between characters, plus a greater use of Zonai Devices for both fighting and getting around.
The game’s strong debut recalls the success of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity (2020), which launched with 173,215 units on the Nintendo Switch and went on to exceed 387,000 copies domestically. While Age of Imprisonment opened a bit lower in raw numbers, it arrives as an early exclusive for the next-generation Switch 2 console, whose base of players is still growing. Its top spot in the charts shows the continued strength of The Legend of Zelda brand and the lasting draw of Koei Tecmo’s action-focused adaptations.
Regarding hardware performance, the Nintendo Switch 2 stayed Japan’s leading platform, selling 90,410 units for the week—an increase of over 6,000 units compared to the week before. Total Switch 2 sales have now hit 2.64 million units since launch. In the meantime, the original Nintendo Switch family sold 23,877 units, while PlayStation 5 systems totaled 7,691 units, reflecting steady but modest performance from competing hardware.
Other leading entries in the weekly software rankings included Pokémon Legends: Z-A, which keeps performing well on both platforms, selling 54,904 copies on the standard Switch and 29,662 copies on the Switch 2 edition. Mario Kart World held third place with 54,413 copies, pushing its total sales to over 2 million on Nintendo’s latest hardware. Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, which was the top seller the previous week, saw a sharp decline after launch across all platforms, combining for roughly 56,000 copies for the period.
The overall market distribution for Week 45 featured six Nintendo Switch 2 titles in the top ten, along with three for the original Switch and one for PlayStation 5, confirming Nintendo’s ongoing software leadership in Japan.
