Rumor Points to New God of War Spin-off Set in Egyptian Mythology Featuring Set as Protagonist

Fresh rumors have surfaced hinting at the direction of the next game from Santa Monica Studio, the developer behind the critically acclaimed God of War franchise. According to a post shared by a ResetERA user known as Angie, who claimed to have been contacted by a source from Reddit, the next title from the studio may not be a direct sequel to God of War Ragnarök but will reportedly remain within the broader narrative universe of the series.

The rumored project is said to feature the Egyptian god Set as its protagonist. In Egyptian mythology, Set is often depicted as a god of war, chaos, and storms — a figure perceived both as a malevolent force and a necessary counterbalance within the pantheon. This character choice would mark a significant departure from the Norse saga centered on Kratos and Atreus, suggesting that Santa Monica Studio may be exploring new mythological territories while maintaining thematic ties to conflict and personal struggle, both hallmarks of the God of War series.

The leak mentions that the game’s field of view seems different from the recent over-the-shoulder camera style that redefined the series starting with God of War (2018). Instead, it reportedly adopts a more traditional third-person perspective, which could imply a shift in gameplay style or cinematic presentation. Furthermore, technological elements may be present in the game, allegedly inspired by the ancient mythos portraying Egypt as a civilization ahead of its time in technological advancement. This blend of mythology and technological flair could set the game apart tonally and visually from its predecessors.

The source also hinted that real-world locations such as the Sinai badlands might appear in the game, though they provided no clarity on whether the title would embrace a fully open-world format or stick to the semi-open structures seen in recent God of War entries. Details on a potential release window remain undisclosed, with the leaker promising to share more information if available.

These claims emerge against the backdrop of ongoing speculation about Santa Monica Studio’s next project. Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier previously stated that the studio’s new game is neither a fresh intellectual property nor a science fiction title. Schreier suggested it might feel like a new IP despite its connections to God of War, which has fueled curiosity among fans. On ResetERA, Schreier commented, “It’s not a new IP but it might feel like one. Maybe that’s why people are confused.” He also firmly dismissed any rumors of a science fiction project, emphasizing that any confirmed information would be shared through his formal reporting channels.

Adding to the intrigue, a separate ResetERA user familiar with the situation described the project as something unexpected. They admitted to initially being skeptical of the game’s concept before growing enthusiastic, suggesting that Santa Monica Studio is venturing into uncharted territory. The user also clarified that the game is not based on a licensed property, reaffirming that it remains an original concept within the studio’s creative portfolio.

Historically, discussions about Santa Monica Studio’s next project have been closely tied to director Cory Barlog, whose influence helped redefine God of War for modern audiences. Schreier previously hinted that Barlog’s next endeavor is regarded as the studio’s “next big thing,” with development reportedly progressing well according to those familiar with the matter.

With no official statements from Sony or Santa Monica Studio, this rumor remains speculative. However, if accurate, the idea of a God of War universe game set in Egyptian mythology with a new protagonist could represent both a bold new chapter for the franchise and a refreshing narrative shift that builds on the thematic legacy of past titles.
