PlayStation Exploring Opportunities to Revive Legacy IPs, Says Hermen Hulst

Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, has hinted at the possibility of reviving classic PlayStation franchises, giving hope to fans of the company’s iconic games. He emphasized the importance of PlayStation’s extensive catalog of intellectual properties, stating that they are an important asset for PlayStation. Hulst mentioned that they are not only developing new franchises but also looking for opportunities to leverage their legacy IP.

PlayStation’s history includes beloved franchises that have shaped generations of gaming. From Jak and Daxter and Sly Cooper to Twisted Metal and Legend of Dragoon, there are many dormant series that fans would love to see revived. Hulst’s remarks suggest that the company is considering its options to bring these iconic franchises back.

“The numerous IPs that we hold are an important asset for PlayStation, and as part of our efforts to strengthen our portfolio, not only developing new franchises, we are also continually looking at opportunities to leverage our legacy IP, ” said Herman Hulst in an interview with Famitsu.

Recent trends in the gaming industry, such as remakes and reboots of classics like Final Fantasy VII Remake and Resident Evil, show a significant demand for revisiting legacy IPs. Sony’s exploration of this could strengthen its portfolio and reintroduce these classics to a new generation of gamers.

While PlayStation has gained praise for new franchises like Horizon Zero Dawn and Ghost of Tsushima, leveraging its legacy IPs offers a chance to cater to longtime fans while diversifying its offerings. Hulst’s statement aligns with PlayStation’s strategy of blending innovation with its heritage, balancing the old and the new.

Whether this leads to remakes, remasters, or new entries in classic series, reviving legacy IPs could shape the future of PlayStation’s portfolio.
