The Witcher 3 Sells Over One Million Copies In Japan, A Record For A WRPG

The Witcher 3 has sold more than one million copies in Japan which is a record for a western RPG. The game is published by Spike Chunsoft in Japan.

The Witcher 3 launched back in Japan with a debut week sales of under 70K copies. It was a good enough result for a Western RPG since there are not many games that can claim this figure in Japan. It had strong legs and while it received multiple releases across the lifetime of its sale there, the cumulative sales have now reached more than 1 million copies.

This shows that the game had strong legs and continued to sell well, not only at retail but digitally as well. There have been a few re-releases too including the Nintendo Switch port as well as the Game of the Year Edition which bundled all DLCs for the game.

The one million figure includes the digital and physical sales of The Witcher 3 in Japan. It could also include the PC version through Steam but this is not confirmed. Still, there are not many games that have claimed 1 million sales in Japan so seeing that The Witcher 3 has achieved this milestone is an impressive feat nonetheless.

The official account also shared a fan-made artwork in celebration of this sales milestone while confirming the number of copies sold for the game.

Some of the best-selling RPGs in Japan include Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, while other games like Monster Hunter and The Legend of Zelda have also sold a million copies across their various games in the franchise.

The only two other Western games that have sold more than one million copies in Japan are Minecraft and Grand Theft Auto V. The Witcher 3 now also joins their rank for its record-breaking sales in Japan even if it took a long time to get there.

The game had recently received a next-gen update bringing ray-tracing and other features to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
