The Last of Us: Part II adaptation for HBO’s TV series will span multiple seasons

HBO’s adaptation of the popular video game, The Last of Us, has been a huge success. With the first season coming to a close, fans were delighted to hear that a second season has been greenlit. However, it seems that there is more to come than originally thought.

The first season of The Last of Us covered the events of the first game, but the upcoming season will tackle the larger scope of The Last of Us: Part II. The story is so extensive that it will require more than one season to cover it all. In a recent GQ interview, show creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin confirmed that the second season will not cover Part II entirely.

When asked if the second season would cover Part II, Mazin was clear in his response: “No. No way.” Druckmann added that the story is “more than one season,” hinting at a third season to come.

Druckmann also discussed his excitement for the changes they’ve made to the story for the TV adaptation. He promised fans that the show will lean heavily into the emotions and feelings that made the game so successful.

Fans are already speculating how the show will cover the extensive story of The Last of Us: Part II. While the creators have not confirmed how many seasons will be needed, they did confirm that more than one season will be required.

Despite the challenges of adapting such a popular game for TV, the creators seem to be enjoying the process. Druckmann described the process as a “joy,” citing the trust and shorthand he shares with Mazin. Mazin added that any disagreements they had were minor and focused on subtleties, which they both believe to be where the beauty lies.

While fans will have to wait for more details on the upcoming seasons, they can rest assured that the show creators are working hard to create a TV adaptation that does justice to the beloved game.
