Sonic Frontiers, a 3D platformer and action-adventure game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega, has achieved a major milestone. The producer of the game, Morio Kishimoto, announced last month that the game has reached 3 million sales, setting a new record for the franchise. The producer thanked the players for their support, which contributed to the game’s commercial success.
Kishimoto shared the updated sales figure in response to a fan who wanted to ask about the last Sonic game that achieved the 3 million copies sold milestone.
“Thanks to your support, we reached 3 million last month! This is our fastest pace ever. Thanks to everyone’s support. Thank you to everyone who played the game,” Kishimoto said.
The game was released in November 2022 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, who criticized some technical issues, it was well received by fans of the series.
The game takes place in the Starfall Islands, where players explore the open world as Sonic, collecting Chaos Emeralds and battling robotic enemies. The game blends traditional elements of the Sonic the Hedgehog series with new features, such as an open-ended design, new abilities like the Cyloop, and improved speed, attack, defense, and ring capacity. Players can also explore Cyber Space levels and complete challenges, puzzles, and battles.
Sonic Frontiers has been compared to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild due to its open-world design and platforming challenges. Players can rescue three of Sonic’s friends trapped in Cyber Space by collecting collectibles found in the open world. Additionally, players can participate in a fishing minigame where they can exchange purple coins for fishing tokens, which can be redeemed for items and collectibles.
