Brand new artwork and design details for the Pyramid Head character from Konami’s Silent Hill 2 have been revealed.
Gecco Corp has unveiled the 2023 Misty Day – Red Pyramid Thing statue, overseen by Masahiro Ito and crafted by Shinya Akao. This rendition showcases previously unseen details from the PS2 character model from Silent Hill 2, standing as the most authentic representation of Pyramid Head to date.
The preorder bonus for this release is a booklet featuring Masahiro Ito’s comprehensive notes, blueprint sketches, and concept paintings related to the statue. Twitter user Darkknight2149 has shared some of the new artwork and delved into the insights gained from the booklet regarding the Pyramid Head’s design.
The project began in 2014, with Ito’s concept art for the upcoming Silent Hill 2 remake being based on the statue’s blueprints. The “Art & Sculpt” booklet begins by crediting Ito and Akao, followed by an unreleased ‘Misty Day, Remains of the Judgment’ painting from 2015. The third page outlines Ito’s intention to refine details not achievable on the original game consoles due to technical limitations while also preserving the character’s original appearance.
Gecco plans to release a separate Flesh Lips statue that can be attached to Pyramid Head, as detailed in the booklet. Ito’s involvement in the new statue is more substantial than in the previous Pyramid Head statue by Gecco, where he provided instructions for the helmet’s shape, paint, and coloring. The booklet reveals that the sack on Pyramid Head’s neck and the side of the helmet share the same substance, depicted in the statue as a dried canvas.
Blueprints were provided for every aspect of the design, including the torso and intricate helmet design. The rectangular base allows for side-by-side posing of two Pyramid Heads, reminiscent of the final boss in Silent Hill 2. While Ito usually leaves Pyramid Head’s face to one’s imagination, the statue provides a glimpse of the face as a doppelganger of James Sunderland, framed by a grid-like pattern.
Masahiro Ito stated, “The inside of the helmet should be visible on this statue, but we need to carefully consider how much we should recreate without destroying the fan’s imagination.” The original plan was to include a detachable head with two versions of the sack pouch i.e. inflated and deflated. However, Ito felt that showing the head would destroy the fan’s imagination, so the plan was abandoned. The deflated pouch was, therefore, chosen over the inflated one.
Detailed instructions were given for the helmet and Great Spear. Once the helmet composition was finished, the rust details were applied and distributed inconsistently to avoid a monotonous design. Clothing details were incorporated to link them to the executioners of Toluca Prison in the Silent Hill mythology. The final page teases a triangular piece to be included with a planned Flesh Lips statue, which is intended to connect to this Pyramid Head statue.
