A new rumor has surfaced regarding the Nintendo Switch 2, suggesting that the upcoming console may feature a 120Hz LCD display with Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and HDR support. This claim originates from Famiboards user Secretboy, who previously provided accurate information about the system’s GPU performance before official details on clock speeds were leaked.
Back in January, Secretboy first mentioned that the Switch 2 would support 120Hz and VRR, stating that this would help optimize the handheld experience. He also claimed that the system would deliver 3 TFLOPS of performance when docked and around half of that in handheld mode. Notably, these figures closely matched the later leaked specs of 3.1 TFLOPS docked and approximately 1.72 TFLOPS in handheld mode. Recently, he has reiterated these display features with confidence, further confirming that the console will use an LCD screen instead of OLED due to cost considerations.
If these details are accurate, the Switch 2 would be a major leap over its predecessor, offering significantly improved visual quality and smoother gameplay. The 120Hz refresh rate could enhance motion clarity, making fast-paced games look more fluid, while VRR could reduce screen tearing and stuttering, especially when a game fails to hit its target frame rate. The inclusion of HDR would also be a notable addition, allowing for better contrast and color depth compared to the standard Switch models.
Currently, the Nintendo Switch OLED and the OG/Lite are limited to 60Hz, meaning this rumored upgrade would effectively double the refresh rate of the next-generation console. However, until Nintendo officially announces the hardware specifications, these details should be taken with caution.
