Rockstar Games is reportedly “confident” that the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series, GTA VI, will have a 60 fps mode on PS5.
In response to a question regarding the possibility of a stable performance mode in GTA VI on PS5, HaiLin Si, Senior Material Artist at Rockstar Games, stated that the development team is “confident”, though he isn’t sure about the game’s rendering resolution in said mode. He also mentioned that Rockstar North remains the primary team working on the upcoming Grand Theft Auto title, and that other studios are only there for support.
HaiLin described GTA VI as the most impressive and advanced project he has ever seen in his 10 years of working AAA titles in the game industry. According to him, all of the game’s assets have been completed. He said that the development team remains confident that GTA VI can run at 60 fps on PS5, though he isn’t sure whether the game runs at 1440p or 1080p in performance mode.
The developer is under NDA and he couldn’t share much, but it’s promising to see that Rockstar Games is aiming to deliver a stable performance mode in GTA VI. With the rumored specs leak for the PS5 Pro indicating a rather modest CPU upgrade, a stable 60 fps mode in GTA VI for PS5 would bode well for the Pro console being able to deliver the same performance with higher visual fidelity.
Previously, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier had reported that Rockstar Games had asked employees to work in-office five days a week starting from April, 2024, as the developer had enterered the final stages of development on GTA VI. This aligns with what HaiLin Si mentioned with regards to his work on the game’s assets being complete.
According Rockstar Games’ Head of Publishing Jenn Kolbe, the decision work in-office was made to put Rockstar Games in the best position to deliver the next Grand Theft Auto at the level of quality and polish the studio knows it requires, along with a publishing roadmap that matches the scale and ambition of the game.
