The Resident Evil 2 remake was released for PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One in January, 2019. It later became available for Amazon Luna, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S in June, 2022, with a Nintendo Switch cloud version following in November, 2022. The game follows the story of rookie police officer Leon S. Kennedy and college student Claire Redfield as they try to escape Raccoon City during a zombie outbreak.
Capcom first considered remaking Resident Evil 2 after the success of the remake of the original Resident Evil in 2002. However, it was postponed as producer Shinji Mikami prioritized the development of Resident Evil 4, released in 2005. The Resident Evil 2 remake was officially announced in August 2015, with the first trailer and gameplay footage revealed at E3 2018. Developed using the RE Engine, also utilized for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.
Unlike the first game’s remake, which aimed to enhance the original experience, this remake re-imagines gameplay and story for modern audiences. Set in Raccoon City amidst a zombie apocalypse, the game puts players in the role of either of two characters, namely Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield. The decision to play as Leon or Claire affects various aspects, including weapons, areas, items, subplots, and supporting characters. Through exploration, players will be able to scavenge resources, such as healing items, ammunition, and key items for puzzles and story progression.
