Sony Interactive Entertainment and Santa Monica Studio’s original God of War trilogy may be set to receive the remastered treatment, based on the latest rumor.
During the latest episode of the XboxEra Podcast, co-host Shpeshal Nick mentioned that a remastered version of the original God of War trilogy may be in development for PS4 and PS5. He mentioned that while he believes the compilation title will be announced in 2024, he doesn’t know whether it will be released in the same year or in 2025.
The mention of a trilogy suggests that God of War Ascension will not be a part of the compilation, and the remasters will be limited to God of War, God of War 2, and God of War 3. Interestingly, all three games have previously received the remastered treatment in some shape or form. God of War 1 and 2 were remastered for the PS3, though those versions of the games never got ported over to modern consoles and can only be played on PS4 and PS5 via PS Plus Premium streaming. God of War 3, on the other hand, received a PS4 remaster that is also playable on the PS5 via backward compatibility.
The basis for this remastered God of War trilogy is likely to introduce newer audiences to Kratos’ past, which was hinted at in the recent DLC for God of War Ragnarok, titled Valhalla. Since the original God of War and God of War 2 are not available on PS4 and PS5, this would not be possible without a native port.
Nick didn’t mention what visual enhancements we can expect from the remasters. Perhaps Support for the PS5’s DualSense features, such as haptics and adaptive triggers, would certainly be welcome.
In related news, during a recent interview, Atreus voice actor Sunny Suljic had inadvertently hinted at a sequel to God of War Ragnarok being in development at Santa Monica Studio.
