An OLED display mod will soon be available for the Nintendo Switch Lite, and it may be followed by another mod that adds an HDMI port.
Twitter user TakiUdon_ appears to have successfully modded an OLED display into the Nintendo Switch Lite, bringing rich blacks and higher contrast to the handheld-only version of the console. They have shared several pictures that show the aforementioned improvements over the default IPS display.
Nintendo Switch Lite IPS vs OLED Comparison
A comparison between the default IPS version and the modded OLED version of the Switch Lite can be seen in the images below.
According to the modder, the price of the OLED mod will be based on interest, though it would fall in the potential range of $25 to $50. They mentioned that the mod isn’t difficulty to apply to the Switch Lite hardware. Additionally, they said that HDMI output is another potential feature that may be modded to the handheld-only console, making it possibly to use it with a TV or monitor, just like with the standard version. However, they pointed out that the output resolution via the HDMI mod would be capped at 720p.
An official OLED version of the Nintendo Switch Lite is unlikely at this point, as the console maker prepares to release the Switch successor, dubbed the Switch 2, possibly sometime later this year. Omdia analyst Hiroshi Hayase recently reported that a forthcoming device from Nintendo, likely the Nintendo Switch 2, featuring an 8-inch display, will contribute to a twofold increase in shipments of “amusement” displays in 2024. Rumors regarding the Nintendo Switch 2’s hardware specifications, particularly details on its display, were also shared by Taiwan’s Economic Daily. The information suggested that the Nintendo Switch 2 is set to feature a display with a refresh rate of 120Hz, leading to the possibility of some games targeting frame rates above 60 fps.
