Nintendo has reached a historic milestone in Spain with the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, which has become the country’s most successful console debut to date. According to Gamereactor, the console sold 108,000 units between its release on Thursday and the following weekend, nearly doubling the previous records set by the PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 5.
The Switch 2’s strong performance was driven in part by Mario Kart World, the latest entry in the franchise and Spain’s best-selling game of 2025 so far. Around 90,000 buyers redeemed download codes for the digital version through the Nintendo eShop, while an additional 5,000 purchased the physical edition, which came in premium red packaging. Combined, these sales brought Mario Kart World to nearly 95,000 units, making it the year’s top-selling game in Spain (second only to EA FC 25 when including all platforms).
Older games also saw renewed interest. Nearly 1,500 copies each of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild (Switch 2 editions) were sold, while Sega’s Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut performed similarly, aided by newly added Spanish language support.
The Switch 2’s 108,000-unit launch far surpassed previous records—outpacing the PSP (54,000), PlayStation 5 (48,000), and even the original Nintendo Switch (45,000 in 2017). It also exceeded the Wii’s modest 15,000-unit debut in 2006, despite that console’s eventual global success.
