Nightdive Studios To Receive Source Code For Its Next Restoration Project

Nightdive Studios is set to receive source code for its next restoration project, based on the latest information.

Stephen Kick, the CEO of Nightdive Studios, took to Twitter/X to share that the studio is getting source code to its next restoration title for Christmas.

So as to not inadvertently give any hints, Kick mentioned that he would give a ‘like’ to every tweet that tried to predict what game it may be. He didn’t state when fans would get to hear more about the project, but it’s likely not going to happen in the immediate future.

Nightdive Studios’ mission is to bring lost and forgotten gaming treasures back from the depths. The developer is known for its work on the remake of the 1994 System Shock game, which is available on Windows, Linux, macOS, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The storyline unfolds on a space station in a cyberpunk depiction of 2072. Players step into the shoes of an unnamed security hacker, tasked with thwarting the schemes of an ominous artificial intelligence known as SHODAN.

The remake project commenced in 2015, initially using the Unity engine. Following a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised over $1 million, the game went through an extended development period of nearly eight years. It faced multiple delays, with anticipated release dates in 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, 2022, and eventually 2023. The delays were attributed to transitioning to the Unreal Engine and restarting development twice after abandoning an ambitious series reboot due to feature creep. The final version focused on staying true to the Kickstarter promises, delivering a faithful remake.

Set in 2072, the protagonist, an unnamed hacker, is apprehended attempting to access Citadel Station files, owned by the TriOptimum Corporation. Brought before TriOptimum executive Edward Diego, the hacker is offered amnesty in exchange for hacking SHODAN. Unbeknownst to the hacker, Diego plans to steal an experimental virus for the black market, promising a military-grade neural implant as an incentive.
