Minecraft Obtains New ESRB Rating for Its Native Xbox Series X Version

JoelBy JoelAugust 30, 2023No Comments2 Mins Read

The popular sandbox adventure game, Minecraft, has been given a unique rating by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) for its compatibility with the Xbox Series X. This rating is in addition to the game’s previous rating in Germany. The ESRB rating offers valuable information about the game’s characteristics and what players can anticipate when playing Minecraft on the Xbox Series X.

The ESRB rating specifically applies to the Xbox Series X version of the game and includes warnings for “Fantasy Violence,” “Users Interact,” and “In-Game Purchases.” According to the rating summary, Minecraft allows players to explore and mine cube-shaped materials in a sandbox environment. The game involves traversing pixelated landscapes, building structures, crafting potions and weapons, and occasionally defending against enemies like zombies, skeletons, and wizards. The rating also notes that while players can use weapons against animals and villagers, such actions are not encouraged.

Developed by Mojang Studios, Minecraft was initially created by Markus “Notch” Persson using the Java programming language. The game underwent several private testing phases before being publicly released in May 2009. It was fully launched in November 2011, with Jens “Jeb” Bergensten taking over its development. As of 2021, Minecraft holds the title of the best-selling video game in history, boasting over 238 million copies sold and nearly 140 million monthly active players.

Minecraft offers a blocky, procedurally generated three-dimensional world with virtually infinite terrain. Players can discover and extract raw materials, craft tools, and items, and build a variety of structures. The game features different modes, including a survival mode where players must acquire resources and maintain health, and a creative mode offering unlimited resources and access to flight. The Minecraft community also contributes a plethora of user-generated content, such as modifications, servers, skins, texture packs, and custom maps, enriching the gaming experience.

The ESRB rating for Minecraft on Xbox Series X confirms optimized compatibility with the new console, and an official announcement may be coming soon.
