Insomniac Games’ stolen data allegedly includes a developmental build of the PS5 version of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and it may lead to an illegal PC port.
Reddit user Beautiful_Ad_4680 appears to have discovered a developmental build of the PS5 version of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 among Insomniac Games’ data that was stolen by a ransomware hacker group, and claims that it may be possible to port it to PC.
According to the Reddit user, the developmental build of Marvel’s Spider-Man2 can be found at the directory location X_i30_devel/code/Output/Built/Release. They claim that things are looking “extremely promising” with regards to the possibility of an unofficial PC port of the game.
Regarding the potential Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 files in the stolen data, they mentioned that the prototype can’t be made to run on PC without compiling it, and they aren’t sure if that’s even possible. They said that most of the files in the build cache are relying on debug exports that are missing from the data.
Previously, it was reported that Insomniac Games had been hit by an attack from ransomware operator Rhysida. The ransomware gang had initially shared limited data online that appeared to back its claim. The gang’s proof-of-hack included a screenshots and character art related to other Marvel characters that may be featured in Marvel’s Wolverine. Additionally, passport scans of Insomniac employees, including a recent Disney hire who was laid off by the developer two months ago, were also shared.
Personal documents of Yuri Lowenthal, the voice actor for Peter Parker in Marvel’s Spider-Man series, are also among the materials. Internal emails and signed confidential documents are also presented as part of the proof-of-hack. The Rhysida gang had given Insomniac a seven-day ultimatum before releasing the complete data set. Concurrently, they conducted an auction for the data, starting at 50 bitcoins, equivalent to just over US$2 million. “With just 7 days on the clock, seize the opportunity to bid on exclusive, unique, and impressive data,” stated Rhysida on its leak site. “Open your wallets and be ready to buy exclusive data. We sell only to one hand, no reselling, you will be the only owner!”
