After years of near-total silence, Hollow Knight: Silksong has shown its first signs of life on Steam. On May 31, 2025, backend entries for the long-awaited sequel were quietly updated on Valve’s platform. According to SteamDB, two Steam packages associated with the game — Sub 342710 and Sub 342712 — received notable changes, marking the first activity on these entries in over 15 months. More significantly, these updates are the first meaningful modifications made to Silksong’s backend since 2019.
While no visible changes have appeared on the public Steam store page, the update has reignited speculation that Team Cherry may be preparing for a long-overdue announcement. With several major gaming events scheduled for early June — including Summer Game Fest and the Xbox Games Showcase — many fans believe the timing of this backend activity is far from coincidental. The updated Steam packages could suggest internal preparations are underway for a release date announcement or at least a new trailer.
The renewed buzz around Silksong first started with a string of cryptic social media posts earlier this year by Team Cherry co-director William Pellen, which prompted widespread fan speculation earlier this year. On January 15, Pellen changed his Twitter profile picture to a chocolate cake and tweeted, “something big is coming. Keep your eyes closed tomorrow.” This led many fans to connect the tweet to the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal that occurred the next day. Digging further, fans discovered that the cake image was sourced from a Bon Appétit recipe posted on April 2, 2024 — the same date that Nintendo later confirmed as the Switch 2-focused Direct scheduled for April 2, 2025.
These coincidences led to theories of a coordinated alternate reality game (ARG) designed to tease Silksong’s return. However, Matthew Griffin, Team Cherry’s head of marketing and publishing, swiftly shut down the rumors. He contacted YouTuber fireb0rn to clarify, stating, “There was no Silksong ARG,” and humorously confirmed, “The cake was a lie.” On the official Hollow Knight Discord, Griffin acknowledged the community’s passion but reaffirmed that the mysterious Twitter activity was not tied to any formal announcement strategy.
Despite that, Griffin did provide one concrete update: Silksong is still in development and “will release.” Originally announced in 2019 as a sequel to the acclaimed Hollow Knight, Silksong was confirmed for PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. It currently has no official release date but with this new change on SteamDB, an announcement could be due soon.
